Post 10 – Challenge 1: A change of plan that requires help!

So Challenge No1 was originally to get 40 myeloma patients to do 40 challenges (at someone’s suggestion!) to raise £4,000.

In retrospect that was silly and I crossed it off my list in my head quite a few weeks ago…many patients are living with the effects of chemo/ transplants/ myeloma per se. To expect many of them to do 40 challenges was ridiculous. If you’re in the throws of chemo or radiotherapy you don’t have any energy a lot of the time, can feel sick and really just feel pretty rotten. Post transplant, it is even worse with very low levels of energy….and doing too much can set you back massively. In addition, many people with myeloma have issues with their bones or kidneys. This can mean they are in pain a lot of the time and unable to get around like other people.

So on this basis, I have now changed Challenge One to see if we can get 40 patients to do just one challenge (more if they want!) – any challenge they like…it might be to walk 1km or it might be any one of my 40 challenges….or something totally different! Realistically, each patient will know what is a challenge for them….and therefore what people might be happy to sponsor them for. If each patient raised £100, it makes £4,000. Add that to the Lent Challenge, and my just giving page, and we can crack the £10,000 target easily!

The other nice thing about this Challenge, is that it doesn’t matter where in the world you are….you can still do the challenge! And every step of the way, we are raising awareness about what Multiple Myeloma is as well as raising money towards research and a better future for myeloma patients.

And if you do sign up, once you have set up your just giving page, please then go to http://www.justgiving.com/teams/40b440 and join our team page so that I know you’re involved and we can track the team as a whole Thank you! Or let me know via a message.

Please feel free to share this post with as many friends etc as you can….it would be great if we can get far more than 40 patients doing this challenge….just think how much money we could raise if we spread this far and wide!!

P.S This post takes me 25% into Challenge 19 – to write 40 blog posts. I’m not quite 25% into my 40th year so we’re on track for that challenge being completed too 🙂 All good!

Post 9 – Challenge 28: Make £40/Sell 40 items at a car boot sale.

Yay….another challenge completed today!

Nick and I headed off up the A40 towards Piddington for Big Ben’s car boot sale today. Two reasons….one, to complete challenge No.28 for my 40challengesb440 and two, because our loft was bulging under the weight of rubbish that we had up there.

It really is amazing what you keep for those ‘just in case’ occasions. Those playstation 1 games that you might use one day because they’re so retro, the baby toys that should be kept because “of course they won’t be dated when Rebecca and Sam have kids’, and the books that you enjoyed reading at 16 and thought you’d still enjoy at 40. Finally we have been strong willed and packed them all into our car….and managed to sell about 1/3 of what we took!

And that 1/3 is pretty impressive really. I hate car boot sales no matter how much other people rave about them. There is a certain type at the Big Ben one that seem to come round, and even if they are getting an ABSOLUTE bargain, still want it for less. If you offered it to them for free, they’d probably ask us to pay them. Tight ar*es!! I would rather donate stuff to a charity shop than sell to those people. Especially the ones who are rude with it. I will admit, slightly shamefacedly, that I laughed in one lady’s face when she offered me a pittance for something as if she was doing me a favour.

Our other learner was that perhaps we should just let the kids sell everything. Nick and I seemed to get bargained down on pretty much everything. Sam on the otherhand, would ask for an amount and on more than one occasion, got paid more than he’d asked for! I think next time we might just hide in the car and eat our sarnies – the kids are obviously better salespeople than us!

But as much as I hate these sorts of things, I think we will probably brave one more before the end of the summer. Another car boot, or we’re thinking of doing a tabletop sale with a few friends (where I’ll be doing challenge 10 and 34 – selling 40 cakes and making 40 cups of tea). What is left at the end of these will most definitely go to the charity shop though!

The other reason that we have to go back to the car boot sale is that Nick has, whilst I emptied out the loft, discovered a rekindled love of his record player. It started when we went to a little coffee shop in Greenwich which was playing music via records rather than CD’s. So as I went up this time, it was to the call that if I found it, could it get passed down. Now none of this would matter apart from the fact that I gave most of our decent records away at the car boot sale we did last summer…..and for an absolute pittanImagece 😦 Part of me had sort of hoped that he couldn’t get it to work as then we wouldn’t feel so gutted. But this evening when we got back, he managed to make it work….so guess what will be filling up our car on the way back next time!

Anyway, after we have given the kids a little bit of money for their sales, Challenge No. 28 was achieved and an additional £40 has gone into my just giving page….making a total so far of £2,218, plus the £3,267 from the Lent Challenge and the £55 from the Retail Walk….that makes, to date, a total of £5,540! Not bad since the original target was £4,000. It’s not the target anymore though…..I really can’t leave it like that, and so my new aim is that I reach £10,000…that would take us up to £80,000 overall since I was first diagnosed in 2009!
